Alcohol & Drug Awareness Training Supervisor (Canada)

This course is for front-line supervisors with responsibility for recognizing safety risks in the workplace and requesting reasonable cause drug and alcohol testing of employees. This 1.5-2 hour course will prepare supervisors to determine whether reasonable cause exists and what to do when they suspect impairment.

Identifying, assessing, and approaching an employee who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a challenging responsibility for supervisors. This module provides an overview of mood altering substances including alcohol, cannabis, medications, and illicit drugs. It also discusses the issues of dependency and enabling.

This module provides an overview of responsibilities in the context of mood altering substances in the workplace. This includes the responsibilities of:

Standard procedures have been developed for alcohol and drug testing. These procedures were originally established through the United States Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and are now accepted throughout North America. Additionally, the procedures have been upheld in Canadian arbitration and court decisions as a fair and accurate way to conduct workplace testing.

Now we’ll look beyond the ongoing activity of managing performance and focus specifically on those things you are expected to do when you have concerns that an employee is unfit for work – that is, at a specific point in time you have an employee who you believe should not be at work because they can’t do their job correctly or safely. This module discusses how to address a situation where an employee is “unfit for work” at a single point in time.

As part of your responsibility to implement your company’s Alcohol & Drug Policy and procedures, it is important for you to understand how to respond when an incident occurs involving an employee.

There may be similar procedures to follow for a contract worker directly involved in a serious incident as well; confirm this with your management. This module explains the steps to follow to determine if post-incident testing is required.
